How SEO works?
Google (or any search engine you're using) has a crawler that goes out and gathers information and stores it in a database about all the content they can find on the Internet- a process known as indexation. The crawlers bring all those 1s and 0s back to the search engine to build an index. That index is then fed through an algorithm that tries to match all that data with your query.
There are a lot of factors that go into a search engine's algorithm, and here's how a group of experts ranked their importance:
The 3 essential components of SEO
Keep in mind that there are three main variables that affect your website’s SEO. All three are crucial and must be taken into consideration if you want to have a very competitive ranking.
Technical SEO for your website
In short, it’s the skeleton of your pages: page loading time, mobile responsiveness, site errors and HTTPs - secure pages.
Just like your body needs bones for support, so does your website. Without good Technical SEO, your other SEO efforts will be almost useless. Why? Because it’s the basics. When it doesn’t work well, all Search Engine crawlers know it, your visitors know it and most importantly - GOOGLE knows it.
Your pages cannot have any disturbances. As soon as your technical side stops performing - you start losing both ranking and visitors.
Page Loading Time
How many times did you start wondering if a page is even working when it takes more than 5 seconds to display any content? You press the “back” button and either load that page again or look for other alternatives without even giving that page a second chance.
Best scenario, is if that visitor tries again, your bounce rate will increase. Worst, that visitors didn’t give your page a second chance and visited another website instead. In reality even your best scenario is bad- high bounce rates will discourage Google from ranking your website high. So try to keep your page load time as low as possible.
Page load time should be MAXIMUM 3 seconds.
Anything more than 5 seconds and your bounce rate is 100%.

Tools to Use
The easiest tool(s) we've found are the YSlow and Page Speed Plugins for Firefox/Firebug.
Last year, we started talking about the importance of making your website mobile friendly in the article Make Mobile Money, and we will talk about it again because, you know...nothing changed, it’s still important.
This is where the future is going guys: more and more of your visitors get access to better phones and have no need to use desktop.
Back in 2014 it was predicted that this would happen and it’s finally here. New data from statscounter shows that mobile has already started beating desktop usage.
As of June 2018, Mobile usage is 52.52% and Desktop 43.63%.
This data makes so much sense though. Think about it: you’re at home on the couch, if you’re bored, you reach for phone. You’re waiting in line or for a date? You get on your phone. Going to the toilet (okay, this not really sanitary) but people do take their phones with them to the bathroom. They’re small and practical and offer you all the entertainment you want.
Speaking of entertainment on mobile, if people are searching to watch a video, read an article or a book, as a smart affiliate marketer, that’s your golden opportunity. Be there when they need you, be easy to find and simple to use on mobile.
We will talk in more details about optimizing your website for mobile in a later lesson. For now:
- Test your website’s friendliness: Your website has to be designed specifically for mobile in terms of content and structure, it’s really not enough have a responsive site. It has to offer a good mobile experience. Does it look nice and inviting on all devices or do you have to zoom-in to read anything? Here is a tool to help you run a mobile-friendly test.
- Segment your mobile vs desktop users: Segment your mobile vs desktop users and gather data specific for your site. Hint: this will show you which users convert better.
Site Errors - Fix them
All those missing pages, 404 Errors, dead links, duplicate content will negatively impact your search engine optimization. As soon as a crawler reports an error on your site, it will label it as not user-friendly and decrease your ranking.
Google wants to minimize all the annoyances related to site errors and will promote websites that work. It’s that simple.

Test your pages and pay attention to all your crawling errors and do something about them. You can get a Crawl Report directly from your Google Search Console. You want search engines to easily access all the data on your website.
Usually, when a visitor requests a page on your site that doesn't exist, a web server returns a 404 (not found) error. This response code clearly tells both browsers and search engines that the page doesn't exist. As a result, the content of the page (if any) won't be crawled or indexed by search engines.
Use a temporary fix for your 404 errors with a 302 redirect. You tell crawlers that your page isn’t currently active but will be in the near future. Which is way better than a 404. Google also promised that 301 and 302 redirects will keep the page authority. We’ll tell you how to do that in Lesson 6.
Since we started talking about status codes, here is a short review on status code classes.
What are HTTP status codes?
An HTTP status code is a server response to a browser’s request. When you visit a website, your browser sends a request to the site’s server, and the server then responds to the browser’s request with a three-digit code: the HTTP status code.
Common status code classes:
1xxs – Informational responses: The server is thinking through the request.
2xxs – Success! The request was successfully completed and the server gave the browser the expected response.
3xxs –Redirection: You got redirected somewhere else. The request was received, but there’s a redirect of some kind.
4xxs – Client errors: Page not found. The site or page couldn’t be reached. (The request was made, but the page isn’t valid — this is an error on the website’s side of the conversation and often appears when a page doesn’t exist on the site.)
5xxs – Server errors: Failure. A valid request was made by the client but the server failed to complete the request.
On page vs Off page SEO
On-page and Off-page while different from one another, they are both crucial to focus for seeing results. On-page SEO refers to optimizing individual pages of your website. Off-page SEO tackles factors outside of your website that can affect rankings. (http://victoriousseo.com)
